Curriculum Information

At Kirk Ireton, we have a broad, rich curriculum.  In addition to delivering the full national curriculum, we also offer our own unique learning opportunities and experiences that help our children become well-rounded young people with a wide range of skills and talents.  We firmly believe in making learning real and meaningful for all children, helping them to understand the links between the different subjects and to see how their learning fits into the real world.

Our school curriculum is constantly being reviewed and updated to reflect changes in government guidance, what best suits the needs of our pupils and, most importantly, to ensure it inspires all the children to learn, discover, play and experience the awe and wonder of new knowledge and skills. Our curriculum provision follows the 2014 National Curriculum which you can view here.

At Kirk Ireton C of E Primary, we have two mixed-age classes that work on 2 and 4 year rolling programmes of study to ensure they cover all key topics. We teach all curriculum subjects, including a modern foreign language for all ages, whilst always focusing on the needs of every individual and supporting them in becoming lifelong learners that have a thirst to always find out more.

You can view our rolling curriculum programme by clicking here.

Our whole curriculum also promotes acceptance and engagement with the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Pupils develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.

We assess children's learning against the 2014 National Curriculum and provide them with suitable challenge and a strong sense of the next steps they will take in their learning.

We teach early reading skills using the Sounds-Write phonics scheme and books, providing the children with the essential skills they need to be successful decoders. At the same time, our aim is to support the children to become life-long readers and so promote reading for pleasure at every opportunity, both at home and at school.

Most importantly of all, we want the children to have fun, to be happy and to come into school with a spring in their step! We hope that by looking around our website in areas like 'School Events', you will see our ethos in action. Staff and children all love it here and that is the most important thing we can say!
